VILSECK, Germany – With flu season in full swing, Bavaria Medical Department Activity officials are encouraging people to take preventive measures seriously, especially pregnant women.

"A pregnant woman who gets the flu is 10 times more likely to be hospitalized than infected people in the general population," said Capt. Joseph Woodring, chief of preventive medicine. "The best protection for pregnant women and their baby is to make sure they get both the 2009 seasonal and H1N1 flu shots." Read More...

Novartis H1N1 vaccines available in Bavaria footprint

VILSECK, Germany – The Bavaria Medical Department Activity received its first shipment of the Novartis-manufactured H1N1 vaccines Nov. 10.

The Novartis vaccines, which are designated for uniformed service members and high-risk beneficiaries older than 4 years old, are now available at the MEDDAC’s seven outlying clinics in Bamberg, Grafenwoehr, Hohenfels, Illesheim, Katterbach, Schweinfurt and Vilseck. READ MORE...

Novartis H1N1 Vaccines to arrive this week
VILSECK, Germany – The Bavaria Medical Department Activity expects the first shipment of the H1N1 vaccines manufactured by Novartis to arrive in the Bavaria footprint the week of Nov. 9.

According to Capt. Joseph Woodring, chief of preventive medicine, once the vaccines arrive, they will be distributed to the MEDDAC’s seven outlying clinics in Bamberg, Grafenwoehr, Hohenfels, Illesheim, Katterbach, Schweinfurt and Vilseck. READ MORE...

Seasonal flu shots available in Bavaria MEDDAC footprint

VILSECK , Germany – In addition to FluMist®, the Bavaria Medical Department Activity is now offering seasonal flu shots at its seven outlying clinics in Bamberg, Grafenwoehr, Hohenfels, Illesheim, Katterbach, Schweinfurt and Vilseck.

"We’re encouraging everyone who wasn’t eligible for FluMist® to go their local Army health clinic and get their annual flu shot," said Lt. Col. Elizabeth Hersch, BMEDDAC deputy commander of Clinical Services.

FluMist now available in BMEDDAC clinics

The Bavaria Medical Department Activity is now offering FluMist®, an intranasal vaccine that helps prevent seasonal influenza, at their seven outlying health clinics in Bamberg, Grafenwoehr, Hohenfels, Illesheim, Katterbach, Schweinfurt and Vilseck.

Flu Zone®, which is the injectable vaccine, is not yet available in the Bavaria footprint.

"Currently, we’re offering the FluMist® to all of our eligible beneficiaries," said Capt. Joseph Woodring, BMEDDAC chief of Preventive Medicine. "Once we receive our shipment of injectable vaccines, better known as flu shots, we will inform our communities through the local papers and AFN."

The influenza virus, more commonly known as the flu, is a contagious disease which can be spread by coughing, sneezing or nasal secretions. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 200,000 people are hospitalized each year with influenza, with 36,000 who die from the disease. Common symptoms include fever, sore throat, coughing, chills, fatigue, headaches and muscle aches.

Healthcare Benefits Awareness Month – September 2009

During the month of September, the Bavaria Medical Department Activity will celebrate EUCOM’s Healthcare Benefits Awareness Month. This is an opportunity for beneficiaries to learn more about the TRICARE resources available to them such as the Nurse Advice Line, TRICARE Online and the Host Nation Liaison Program.

Beneficiaries are encouraged to attend the various healthcare events being hosted throughout the Bavaria footprint. Each health clinic is hosting a health fair in addition to several community events such as car seat safety checks, physical therapy events, suicide prevention fairs, sexual health education and shoe selection clinics.
